STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE (as of designation - May 20, 1982):
The oldest building in continuous use by a major oceanographic
research institution in the country, this is the first permanent
structure of the Scripps Institution, an early marine biological
station that became the nation's first oceanographic institute in
1925. Designed by a noted California architect, it is an early example
of reinforced concrete construction.
