Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 4, 1993):
Pulpit Rocks is a prime example of the findings of the
First Geological Survey of Pennsylvania and the impact of that
survey upon the study of the geology of the eastern United States.
This survey, conducted between 1836 and 1858, set the framework
for all future geological work in the Appalachian Mountains
and for stratigraphy throughout the eastern United States.
