Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 12, 1965):
This small brick cottage was the birthplace of Thomas Alva Edison
(1847-1931), one of America's most illustrious inventors. Although he
left here in 1854, Edison cherished the memory of this house; in 1906,
he acquired it from his sister. Edison was one of America's most
illustrious inventors. His accomplishments in the development of the
telegraph and telephone are legion, and in 1929 Congress awarded him a
gold medal for his contributions to mankind.
